Bonnie Wenk Park

A McKinney park we come back to for the climbing. It is where we found out the boys are good at it.

SendMessage

We keep three parks in rotation for the days when the children simply need to run — this one, Finch Park, and Celebration Park. They are interchangeable in most respects. This is the one we choose when the boys are the priority.

What it is for

The climbing structures. On an April afternoon we brought a bulgogi picnic and stayed from before noon until the middle of the afternoon, and the two boys went directly for the climbing and stayed there.

That afternoon is also how we learned something about them. Watching them work at it, Ni’s observation was that they are genuinely good climbers — which is not the kind of thing a parent finds out by deciding to. You find it out by taking small children somewhere with a structure and enough time, and then paying attention.

The practical shape of a morning here

It takes a packed lunch well, which is most of what makes it a few hours rather than forty minutes. And there is a Trader Joe’s near enough that the two have become a single errand in our heads: the park, then the shop, then home for lunch.

The verdict

Worth the Saturday

One of three parks in our rotation and the one we pick when the boys need to burn something off. Bring lunch.
