A Texas summer sorts a family’s days into two categories, and the sorting happens by about eleven in the morning.
In the cool months there is no problem to solve. The kids go to a playground for air, or we walk the neighbourhood, and that is the morning. Once the heat sets in properly, neither of those is available, and the day needs a different answer. Ours is one of two places: the HOA pool the moment it opens, or here.
Its best season is the one you would not pick
The counterintuitive thing about a rec center is that its quality has almost nothing to do with the building and almost everything to do with how many other children are in it.
Right now school is out, so the playground inside is packed. During the school year the same room is nearly empty and far more fun for our three. Which means the summer months — precisely when you most need an indoor option — are when this one is least pleasant, and the pleasant version is available on a random Tuesday in February when you did not need it at all.
Worth knowing before you make the drive on a July afternoon expecting relief.

A gym and a pool. Aini uses both, and came home from one of those mornings reporting that it had been really fun — which is not an outcome you can schedule, only make room for.

Worth the Saturday
One of two places we fall back on when the sun makes outdoors impossible. Worth timing against the school calendar rather than the weather.
