Scale and stories

Week three, where the same object gets described twice — once under a microscope, once from a bird — and a circle gets cut into wedges until it admits it was a rectangle.

A circle gets cut into wedges, and the wedges get pushed together the other way up, and what comes out is very nearly a rectangle. One side is the radius. The other side is half the way around. Multiply them and the formula for the area of a circle falls out of a pair of scissors.

Nobody hands her πr². She rearranges a circle until it confesses.

The week’s hidden idea

Scale. Map scale, ecosystem scale, historical time, the distance between her own world and a dollhouse. Small things contain large things; large things are made of small things.

This is the third week, and by now the pattern of the month is itself part of the lesson. She knows a connecting idea is in there. She has found the last two. What changes in week three is that she starts looking for it early, which is a different kind of attention than she started the month with.

The Scale Story

The week’s writing is one piece: take a single object and describe it twice, once from close enough to see its grain and once from high enough to see where it sits.

The revision question on Tuesday is the sharp one. Not whether the two descriptions are accurate, but whether she used different words at each scale — whether the language changed when the distance did, or whether she wrote the same sentences twice with the nouns swapped.

That is a real writing problem, and it is the same problem a scientist has when choosing what to record.

What the maths was doing underneath

Circles on Monday. Then the diagonal across a park on Tuesday, which is the Pythagorean theorem arriving in the only form that makes an eight-year-old care about it: the shortcut is genuinely shorter, and by exactly how much can be worked out.

Wednesday is the first algebra of her life, and it comes wearing the snail. If a snail grows half a centimetre a month, how big is it after n months? The letter n is not introduced as a concept. It is introduced because the question cannot be answered without one.

Thursday she redraws her apartment, this time on a coordinate grid, each corner of each room labelled with a pair of numbers. The map from week one, at a different scale, in a different language.

The float and sink experiment she designed herself

Science on Tuesday hands her the equipment and not the procedure. She writes the hypothesis, decides what to test against what, runs it, and explains the result using density — a word she already had before the month started.

The point is not the answer. Things float or sink and she could have been told. The point is that the shape of the investigation was hers, which is the year’s standing posture in science: she poses the question, she designs the comparison, she writes the explanation.

Thursday, the snail again

Observation log number four. The instruction is to measure the shell if it can be measured, and then to compare against the entry she wrote in week one — the baseline she made before she knew it was a baseline.

Three weeks between the two readings. This is the first time in the month that her own earlier work is the instrument.

The question she was asked to answer for herself

Wednesday of week three carries a small, quiet instruction that shapes the following week: next week there is time set aside to look into something properly. What do you want to look into?

She picks. It gets written down. And week four’s research writing is on her topic, not one she was assigned — which is the first move of the year toward handing her the planning itself.
